Committee hoping to raise £80k

- Chris Marzella

A community owned facility in Tyndrum has been placed on the market as villagers launch an ambitious bid to purchase an axed tourist information centre to replace it.

Tyndrum Village Hall, owned by the village’s population, closed its doors in June last year.

Now it has been put up for sale as campaigners look to raise enough money to take over the axed Visit Scotland tourist information centre.

The dilapidated facility, run by Tyndrum Village Hall Committee, has been put up for sale with an asking price of £80,000.

Kelda Platt, treasurer of the Tyndrum Village Hall Committee, said of the decision to place the facility on the market : “It’s a sad day for the community in a lot of ways. “There’s a lot of history there.” The Observer reported back in December how villagers were launching an ambitious bid to purchase the former tourist information centre to replace the village hall.

Visit Scotland earmarked its tourist information hubs in Tyndrum and Callander for closure last October, citing a drop in footfall for the decision.

If the committee can sell the hall for the £80,000 asking price the funds would then go towards the purchase of the tourist information centre as a replacement. The village hall closed its doors, after over 60 years serving the community, when it fell in to a state of disrepair.

Estimates to repair the village hall were calculated at around £40,000 – for re-roofing, a new boiler, rendering and repairs to toilets and windows.

Repairs at the facility were needed with no funding in place to meet the running costs.

The land on which the village hall stands was gifted to the community and it was built around 1950.

In the constitution it states that the hall is owned by all residents of Tyndrum who are on the electoral role.

The village hall comprises an entrance vestibule, approximately a 100 square metre open hall area, kitchen, storage area and ladies and gents bathrooms.

There is car parking for at least five cars to the front of the property and there is additional ground to the front and side of the main building.

The property is being marketed by Auction House Scotland.

The deadline for offers is June 28.
