Surprise for Castle visitors as King Charles I turns up just as tour guide talks about him!

-

There was a “Royal” visit to Stirling Castle at the weekend when King Charles I made his first trip to the historic landmark since 1633.

The king, who visited the city following his coronation, was brought back to life by an English DJ during a visit to the popular tourist attraction on Saturday.

Daniel Williams (40), from Sutton Coldfield, is bidding to take his alter ego around historical sites and locations that the 17th century monarch once visited.

On Saturday, he made the trip north, starting with a visit to Dunfermline Palace in the morning, before making his way to the castle in the afternoon.

Daniel, a music producer and DJ, was persuaded to head to Stirling by local historian and author Jack Jardine.

He said: “I got there and the manager came out and they granted me special permission to enter the castle.

“All of the staff were addressing me as “your majesty”.

“At one point a tour guide was leading a tour through the castle and had been talking about King Charles I. Just at that point, completely by chance, I walked around the corner and didn’t know what she had been talking about. People must have been thinking it was a set–up.

“I sat down in the banquet hall and I ended up in selfies with a whole load of American tourists.

“I’d like to say a big thank you to Stirling Castle and the wonderful staff for a great visit. I’d love to go back in the future.”

Since returning from his visit to Stirling, Daniel is now working on a piece of music, inspired by Stirling Castle, that he hopes will go on to form an album of tunes inspired by the various historical locations he visits.

In 1633, King Charles stayed at Stirling Castle for two days.

Charles’ conflicts with Parliament led to the English Civil War between the Royalists and Parliamentarians from 1642-51.

Between 1645 and 1646 the Royalists were defeated by an alliance between parliament and the Scots and Charles surrendered to the Scots, who, in exchange for £100,000, handed him over to Parliament in January 1647.

He was held under house arrest at Holdenby House in Northamptonshire until he escaped in June of that year.

He fled to the Isle of Wight in November of that year, after having made contact with the Parliamentary Governor of the Isle of Wight, whom he believed to be sympathetic.

However, he was imprisoned at Carisbrooke Castle and later moved to Windsor Castle.

He was placed on trial for treason and was beheaded on January 30, 1649, aged 48.
