Running into history books

- Robert Fairnie

Around 2500 people took part in the first Stirling Scottish Half Marathon on Sunday.

Great Run announced that, as the marathon returned for a second year, the new 13.1-mile race would be the star addition to their weekend of events in the city.

And it didn’t disappoint with scores of people lacing up their trainers and setting off to run around the stunning route – which took in much of Stirling city centre and finished alongside the full marathon in front of cheering crowds near Kings Park.

Edinburgh runner Michael Crawley was the first to finish the course with an impressive time of 1:09:33 to write himself into the history books as the first ever winner of the event.

He said: “The course was great. I would like to have had a bit of company on the run. I was out on my own the whole way, but it’s a really nice course.

“I would liked to have run a couple of minutes faster, but that’s always the case.

“The atmosphere was good. There was lots of people in the city centre and then you go out on to the main road and it’s a bit lonely for a couple of miles, but then you come back in to the crowds.”

Stuart Paterson (1:15:03) and Jason Kelly (1:15:55) were second and third respectively.

In the women’s half marathon, Edinburgh runner Sarah Brown was first home in a time of 1:26:58. The runners-up were Louise Tyler (1:28:21) and Kirsty O’Brien (1:28:32).
