County girls will be going for glory

Sailors have plenty on their Plate

- Donald Morton

Eight days after they went down in the BT Cup final against Melrose, Stirling County will be making a quick return to Murrayfield when their U18 and U15 girls’ squads playing in their respective Girls Club Cup finals.

The older girls will meet Biggar while the younger squad are up against Caithness, both games being played on Sunday at the national stadium.

One of the girls taking part is Kirsty Wilson, U18 player of the year — and she can’t wait to run up the tunnel on to the pitch in her final season of youth rugby.

“Being part of Stirling County means a great deal to me,” said Kirsty. “I joined the club at U15s level at a time when there was little prospect of playing any matches due to the lack of girls and resources. Now with over 30 players in the U18s team, an established U15s team and a fast growing U12s team the girls’ section at Stirling is thriving.

“The level of the girls’ rugby at Stirling has improved massively and as a result, a few of the girls, including myself, have been lucky enough to be involved in the Scotland U20 PDP. Through this a teammate and I were chosen to be part of the U18 Scotland 7s squad that competed in the School Games and in a Rugby Europe tournament in Andorra.”

She added: “The team has worked hard on and off the pitch this season and it makes it even more significant that this will also be the second time in a row that the U15s have made it to their final.”
