Villagers’ hospital car scheme gets funding

Service will make getting to appointments easier

- Chris Marzella

Villagers in Killin have developed plans for a voluntary car scheme for patients travelling to Forth Valley Royal Hospital.

The Killin Medical Practice Patient Participation Group has been given a £15,000 grant from Stirling Council towards a voluntary car scheme for journeys to hospitals and clinics for people who have difficulty accessing public transport.

The funding comes following a residents request for improved travel services to access healthcare from Tyndrum, Crianlarich, Killin, Ardeonaig and Lochearnhead.

A spokesperson for the group said: “This service will save people transferring between up to three different buses, each way, for their journey to the hospitals in NHS Forth Valley and equally long journeys outwith the Stirling area.

“We also aim to reduce social isolation and enhance the wellbeing of people in our area, by enabling access to healthcare and social activities.

“Difficulty in getting about, loneliness and social isolation are serious problems affecting people’s physical and mental health, especially as they get older and we hope that our scheme will make a positive impact in our community.”

The group met with Mid Scotland and Fife MSP, Dean Lockhart and Councillor Jeremy McDonald last month to discuss the plans.

Mr Lockhart said: “The work undertaken already by the group is impressive and shows the dedication and commitment shown by the local communities to gather the necessary financial support in order to get the project off the ground.

“Whilst more work needs to be done to make it a reality, I have no doubt that this scheme will be hugely beneficial for everyone.”
