Rural land used as dumping ground

Fed-up farmer appeals to fly-tippers

- Robert Fairnie

A farmer has hit out at“lazy” fly-tippers who dump their rubbish on his property.

James McLaren of Murrayshall Farm, on the outskirts of the city south of Cambusbarron, is sick of people leaving discarded litter and industrial waste on his land.

He told the Observer that just last week he found piles of discarded bottles, cans, food wrappers and takeaway containers which appeared to have been emptied out of a car.

A member of the public gave up their own time to help clear the rubbish into bags.

And Mr McLaren said: “It is laziness and dumping rubbish like this only means that someone else is going to have to pick it up. It falls on the responsibility of the land owner – who in this instance is me – although we had help in clearing this rubbish up.

“Last week [on Sunday, May 20] it looked like someone had pretty much just gutted out the contents of their car and left it next to the road [Polmaise Road]. This has been going on for years. There can be times where it happens once or twice each week and then it might not happen for a month.”

Mr McLaren believes that workers completing jobs on properties are also dumping waste materials such as slabs and bricks in the area.

He added: “I think there are people out there who are just getting rid of materials on the fly after completing a job. People should check that, when they are getting work done, those doing the job have the proper certificates required to dispose of materials.”
