- Donald Morton

Members, parents, friends and supporters of 25th Stirling (Dunblane) Boys’ Brigade gathered to celebrate a remarkable year of achievements for their 160 boys and young men at the recent annual display and prizegiving.

Chief guest and inspecting officer was BBC Scotland football and rugby commentator Paul Mitchell, himself a former Boys’ Brigade member in Leith.

It was a hugely significant evening for the company, as its biggest ever number of Queen’s men in one year were presented with the highest award in the Boys’ Brigade.

Captain Paul Christmas said: “To present 16 Queen’s Badges is quite incredible and represents a remarkable group of young men in one year group, who have given many years’ of service. In addition, to look at 16 lined up for a photo represents almost 1000 hours of volunteering service these young men have given to various organisations and people in their community as they worked towards the award.”

Company Section office-in-charge Colin Anderson, who co-ordinates the Queen’s Badge programme in Dunblane, added: “Many of them have gained their Silver Duke of Edinburgh’s Award at the same time as this award by using the skills, physical and volunteering sections.

“The Queen’s Badge doesn’t just start when the work officially begins two years before now; it’s built on the characteristics they’ve built up over previous years in the BB and it’s pleasing to have another eight President’s Badges being presented this year, too, allowing more young men to continue to gain the Queen’s Badge in future.”

As well as the annually awarded trophies, there was another first this year as Junior Section P6 boys were the first in BB Scotland to be awarded the JASS Award.

Run by the organisation Friends of the Award, JASS is designed to build on the skills and attitudes needed for Duke of Edinburgh awards in the future and Dunblane BB was part of a pilot to begin offering the award in uniformed organisations.
