Increased capacity for village music festival

- Robert Fairnie

Organisers of Killin Music Festival were able to release more tickets after plans were agreed to increase the capacity of the event.

Briefs have been in-demand for the popular musical showpiece which takes place in the Perthshire village next week – from June 15 to 17.

Acts include Blazin’ Fiddles and Niteworks on the Friday, Peatbog Faeries, MecLir and Ho-Ro on the Saturday while highly-respected duo Phil Cunningham and Aly Bain will perform a special seated show on the final night.

Also performing will be The Camans, The Mocking Dogs, Calum MacKenzie Cross, Katee Kross, Tannara, SUAS, Mec Lir, Kim Carnie and many more.

Around 100 extra tickets were last week released for the Friday and Saturday evening shows, but not the Sunday performance of Aly Bain and Phil Cunningham as this is a seated show and already sold out.

Organisers say that after three months of work they were granted a licence to increase the capacity in the McLaren Hall to 500.

In addition to the live music in the evenings there will be a host of fun activities and free entertainment on offer throughout the village across the weekend.

On the Saturday there will be a Highland Hussle Workout, a ukulele workshop and a free craft fair with kids crafts all day.

The following day McLaren High School Pipe Band will parade down Killin Main Street and there will be a free community coffee morning with the local community choir and Killin Primary School choir.

Some of the best local emerging artists will perform at the free open stage competition on the Sunday too.

It was revealed over the weekend that these acts were: Lisa Kowalski, Rhuval, Canny Band, Katie Allan, Abi Pryde, Strachan, DLU and The 101.

They will all compete to win a spot on the main stage in 2019, a place on the Danny Kyle Open Stage at Celtic Connections 2019, and the KMF open stage trophy.

In the Portnellan Tent there will be free live music for everyone throughout the day on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

There are also expected to be impromptu live performances in local pubs throughout the weekend – in keeping with the tradition of the event.

The volunteer-run festival was launched in 2015 and is said to bring together the community while also welcoming visitors to the area from across the country.

Among the performers last year were Dougie MacLean, Skerryvore and Manran.

The final batch of tickets are on sale for the evening concerts. For more information go to killinmusicfestival.com.
