Riverside turn title party-poopers

- Sports Reporter

Riverside Athletic U17s ended their FVDA League season with a 3-2 win which dented Dunblane United’s title hopes.

United needed to beat Riverside to win the league for a second time but their opponents – who hadn’t won since March – turned party-poopers. The early stages were tight, with Riverside edging it.

But it was United who took the lead in 37 minutes with a tap-in by Ross Stewart.

In recent weeks, Riverside have caved in, however this wasn’t to be the case this time around.

Five minutes later, a free kick was headed home by centre half Kenny Allan for his first goal of the season.

Riverside came flying out of the traps after the restart and Kobe Furzer took advantage of a great clearance by keeper Logan Barnes to give Riverside a 2-1 lead.

Dunblane were stunned and worse was to follow when great chasing by Ross Gilvear allowed Furzer to score his second of the day and Riverside’s third.

The home side now needed to score three goals to win the league.

Despite ex-Alloa player Nathan Gillhooley grabbing a consolation, Riverside were never going to lose and by doing so handed Armadale the title. The GDWM man of the match went to Kobe Furzer.

Riverside head off to Barcelona on June 23 and will be representing the Chris Mitchell Foundation throughout this trip.

They will return to preseason on July 23. For more details please contact Keith Morrison on 07598 794389.
