For the second consecutiv­e week, Ross Downie and Mark Worsley proved to be the top pairing again winning all four of their sets and providing the base for the victory.

Stirling 3 are sitting second in Division Four and must win their last two matches to ensure promotion. The ladies returned to league action after a couple of weeks off by recording their best result of what has been a disappoint­ing season to date, drawing 6-6 with highflying Killearn.

The ladies team was Lesley Greenaway (captain), Janet Brown, Wendy Hamlet, Moira McKeand, Isobel Smit and Fiona Dempster. Bridge of Allan men’s first team have given themselves a great chance of retaining the Central Scotland Tennis Division One title after an emphatic 9-3 victory over Dunblane.

Despite the absence of skipper Colin Woodward, the addition of head coach Sam McNeil combined with US collegiate starlet Ruaridh Fraser produced a decisive four-set winning streak.

With the Bowmaker twins Calum and Lewis claiming three sets and Jack Patterson and Chris Horgan adding the other two, a decisive victory was nailed.

Woodward said: “We’ve won four matches in a row and the destiny of the title is in our own hands. We set out at the beginning of the season to retain our title and with just three ties left we are once again in pole position.”

However there was disappoint­ment for the men’s seconds who slipped to an 8-4 defeat at Stirling which has now seen them fall into the bottom two of the second tier.

At Cumbernaul­d the ladies firsts claimed a 9-3 victory, which means they remain in second place in Division One.

The number three pairing of Karen Robertson and Annie MacPherson stepped up from their usual places in the second team to win all four sets, while the top string pairing of Olwyn Roy and Terry Moran and number two couple of Doreen Birnie and Jenny McKenna helped keep their title hopes alive.

The ladies seconds – Liz McGregor, Anita Fincham, Jane Cameron, Mandy Ross, Wendy Scott and Laura Currie – lost 7-5 to Falkirk at home.

They now need to win at least two of their remaining three matches to stay in Division Two next season.
