County suffer league and cup defeats

Woeful weekend as sides slump

- Sports Reporter

It was a disappointing weekend for Stirling County’s cricketers, with both XIs losing in their Western Union league games on Saturday and the County going out of the Scottish Cup on Sunday.

At Poloc on Saturday, the home side batted first against Stirling in their latest Premier Division fixture, losing three early wickets.

That brought professional Jurie Snyman and his South African colleague Coenraad Nel together in a partnership which saw them add 193, leaving County to chase 283 for victory.

Snyman hit an unbeaten 148, while Nel contributed 84 before being dismissed near the end of the innings.

In reply, County never really looked like getting close and only teenage South African amateur Brandon McMullen, who was top score on 51, kept the home side at bay as County slipped to 153 all out.

On Sunday, two players with Stirling connections were responsible for knocking County out of the Scottish Cup.

Heriots batted first at New Williamfield and were in trouble at 126 for seven before skipper Keith Morton, whose dad Willie was a stalwart at Stirling for many years, scored 44 and joined by E Meiri (53), helped his team to 217 all out.

Brandon McMullen took five for 25 for Stirling and Rukman Hewage took three for 38. Stirling’s reply was disappointing, with only Louis Ware (39) reaching double figures.

Alex Knapman, who played at Stirling a couple of seasons ago, took three for 18 and Morton grabbed three for 21.

Matchball sponsors at the weekend were Robin Lang and Les Sutton.

On Saturday, County are home to Dumfries in the league.

Stirling 2nds went down by nine wickets to Drumpellier 2nds on Saturday at New Williamfield.

Batting first, Stirling struggled throughout against tight bowling and Nick Mackay’s 38 was their top score in a total of 131, a figure their opponents passed with only one wicket down.

On Saturday, the seconds are at Dumfries 2nds.
