Caught deadly chill

-

A soldier died from pneumonia just two months after his wife passed away.

Sgt Robert Yule was a regular soldier and had served 21 years with the Royal Scots.

He left the regiment and was appointed store keeper at Stirling for the National Telephone Company and he moved to Causewayhead where he lived for 12 years. He was captain of the Boys’ Brigade.

Following the outbreak of war, he joined 3rd Battalion A&SH and went to France in November, 1914. He remained there until March, 1915, when he was sent home having been found to be unfit for service abroad owing to defective eyesight.

The 48-year-old remained with the 3rd Battalion and served at Woolwich, Dreghorn, and Mortonhall, Edinburgh before being posted for duty at Stirling Castle.

Two weeks earlier he had been sent to Edinburgh where he “caught a chill” and on returning to Stirling became seriously ill. He died in Stirling Royal Infirmary. Sgt Yule and his wife left two surviving sons.
