Station Hotel commandeered by Army

-

Stirling’s Station Hotel, a popular venue in the city for functions, was taken over by the military 100 years ago. It was to be used by the Army for clerical purposes.

Furnishings and some of the coaching stock was to be disposed of at auction.

In Bannockburn, Mrs Fisher, Bruce Street, received a letter from her husband John, an Army lance corporal, explaining he was a prisoner of war and being treated in a Belgium hospital.

He had lost part of his left arm and two fingers of his right hand. L/Cpl Fisher had been missing since the latest German offensive, having been in the 51st Division which bore the brunt of the attack. The soldier was a former Co-op vanman and beadle at LadywellUF Church. He was a popular figure in Bannockburn and there was much relief in the village at the news he was alive.
