Harness racing returned to Corbiewood on Friday with spectators enjoying a fantastic evening of high quality racing.

The first and second races were both heats for open handicap horses with the opener won by Catherine Shields trainee Saunders Hoochie who led from start to finish while the second race went to Stoneriggs Banner (Falkirk) and trainer/driver Hugh Menzies.

Race number three was a maiden and novice class event and it was English trainer Teresa Haythornthwaite who harnessed up another easy winner in the shape of Ela Mana Mou, who scored quite comfortably for driver James Haythornthwaite.

In race four - the fourth leg of The Standardbred Horse Sales Company Star Maker Series - there was a smaller field and seven year-old grey novice Al Jolson got back to winning ways after a few years off the track.

The fifth race and one of the highlights of the evening was The STAGBI (Standardbred and Trotting Association of Great Britain and Ireland) Future Broodmares Open Preferred Handicap which always attracts some of the UK’s top racing mares and this year was no exception.

Coming into the home stretch towards the finish line they were spread across the track with every one in with a chance but it was Alex Hay trainee Dynamic Ace who had her nose in front on the line for driver William Greenhorn.

The final race was for horses who qualified from races one and two. It fell the way of Robhall, who was almost 10/1 in the betting with catch driver Gregor Menzies on board.

Robhall waited patiently at the back and coming into the race through the last quarter-mile to get up just before the line to take victory.

The next meeting at Corbiewood is scheduled for Friday, June 15, first race 7.30pm, £11 entry and under 16s free.
