Teenage pair star for Stirling County

- Donald Morton

They say cricket is a funny old game and it was proved at New Williamfield on Saturday.

Batting first against West of Scotland in their latest Western Union Premier Division match, Stirling County had slumped to 88 for six only for teenagers Brandon McMullen and Tom Jones to rescue them.

South African amateur McMullen scored 127 and Jones 78 in a partnership of 163 which demoralised their Partick opponents with County ending in 263 all out.

In response, West started well to reach 60 for three. Then the game changed when Akram Shakoor, who had taken two wickets, was removed from the attack after bowling two head-high balls.

He was replaced by Rukman Hewage and he proceeded to rip through the rest of the West batting, taking six for 21 in six overs as they collapsed to 118 all out to give Stirling their third win of the season at the halfway stage.

On Saturday they take on Prestwick at New Williamfield on a day when former players are invited along to support the side.

Matchball sponsors this week were Robin Lang and French Duncan Accountants.

County’s 2nds lost heavily in Western Union Second Division away at leaders Kilmarnock.

The home side batted first scoring 289 for eight with Vamsi Machana taking three for 78 and Lois Wilkinson two for 29.

In reply, Stirling were all out for 130 helped by 59 not out by skipper Paul Bielby. On Saturday they visit Anniesland. ●Pictures courtesy of David Potter.
