Pride at stake as top duo go head-to-head

Bridge of Allan to host charity exhibition match

- Sports reporter

Two of Scotland’s best squash players will take to the court for a special charity exhibition match at Bridge of Allan Sports Club in the coming weeks.

The club is set to host the showpiece on Sunday, July 8 – with Scotland Commonwealth Games star Kevin Moran and newly-capped Scotland number five Stuart George facing off.

The match will take place in aid of the charity Lisa’s Gift, which was created in memory of Kevin’s late sister.

Bridge of Allan club president Walter McAllister believes those who come along will get to see some high-level sporting entertainment, while supporting a good cause.

He said: “Kevin is doing a tour of leading clubs across Scotland in order to raise money for his late sister’s charity which is all about helping disadvantaged children enjoy activities and sport they may not otherwise have had the chance to experience.

“So I would really appeal to the squash community around Central Scotland to get in touch with us and book tickets for the match.

“Although the match is all about raising money for charity there is a competitive edge to it as I believe Stuart has never beaten Kevin before – and with the latter ranked at number four and Stuart at number five there is quite a bit on the line.”

Kevin added that his match at Minewood comes as part of a frantic period of activity on the squash court.

He said: “I start out on July 6 and then head on to Edinburgh, Dundee and Aberdeen – travelling all the way to Thurso with other events at Inverness, Glasgow and Dumfries.

“Obviously I am delighted to do everything I can to raise funds for the good causes we hope to further through the charity, and a big thank you to Stuart George for agreeing to provide the opposition on July 8.

“I have many happy memories of playing at Bridge of Allan Sports Club having won the Central Scotland Open there last year and I’m really looking forward to the evening.”

He added: “Although I might be a bit drained by the time I get to Bridge of Allan I’ve never lost to Stuart and I don’t intend to on July 8, – while I’d imagine he will be equally determined to beat me for the first time. So hopefully that will make for a cracking encounter.”

Prices for the match, which is sponsored by Eye Rackets UK, are £5 for adults, and £2 for children and concessions.

Action gets underway at 5pm. Contact the club on 01786 834397 or email steve.ingram@ boasc.com.
