Group back US hand cyclists
A Stirling charity has been supporting US quadruple amputee and quadriplegic hand-cyclists during a journey across Scotland.
Recyke-a-bike has been helping Our Ability hand cyclists John Robinson and Doug Hamlin as they cross the country via canal paths over three days.
Chief executive of Recykea-bike, of Alloa Road, Causewayhead, Angela Barron said:
“Our charitable objectives align closely with those of Our Ability, particularly those around access for all to cycling and employability.
“We couldn’t pass up the chance to support John, Doug and team on their quest to cross Scotland from west to east in an effort to raise funds and awareness of the ability within all people with disabilities.
Recyke-a-bike is providing ride leaders, mechanical and vehicular support as well as catering to the 14-strong team of cyclists as they pedal along the Forth and Clyde, and Union Canals.
The team started from Loch Lomond Shores on Tues June 26 and rode to Port Dundas in Glasgow.
On Wednesday June 27 they headed from Glasgow to the Kelpies in Falkirk with the the final push scheduled yesterday (Thursday) from the Falkirk Wheel all the way to the Canal Basin in Edinburgh.
It is the first time that Our Ability founders John Robinson and Doug Hamlin have taken on a challenge in Scotland.
Mr Robinson said: “For the past five years, as a quadruple amputee, I have led a team that is hand-cycled across New York State 375 miles along the Erie Canal.
“Our goal for the past five years has been to raise awareness as to the ability within all people with disabilities! We have touched thousands of people with disabilities in New York State and have built a scholarship fund for people with disabilities to move on to secondary school.”
