Ajwa’s pennies turn into pounds for talking books

-

A Stirling schoolgirl who saved £10.50 in pennies towards the cost of making a new audiobook for blind and partially sighted children has prompted friends and family to help raise the total to £130.50.

Seven year-old Ajwa Tariq, a pupil at Braehead Primary , was encouraged by her father to continue a family tradition of philanthropy.

The money Ajwa raised will go towards the Stirling Community Talking Book drive. This aims to raise £1,500 to help sight loss charity RNIB add a new title to its Talking Books library.

Janette Scott who launched the drive this year, received Ajwa’s donation at her school assembly.

“It’s wonderful that people in Stirling of all ages are helping the blind and partially sighted to enjoy the same books as they do,” said Janette, who lives in St Ninian’s and has sight loss herself.

“We can raise funds by doing anything – pub quizzes, bake-sales, sponsored walks, local lotteries – anything that you, your family, friends or colleagues can do together and have fun.”

Ajwa’s father Tariq said:“I grew up in an amazing family where we were always taught the lessons of kindness, respect and love for all people.

“I was the same age as my daughter when I saw how keen my father was to help people in need so when I passed my exams I became involved in local charity work myself.

“I often speak to my children about why volunteering is necessary for a healthy society. Why we should spend few moments for those who need our help. I learned from my father that we should return something back to the community from where we got something.

”Though she is quite young, I can foresee how far Ajwa can go for those who really need help. She aims to be a specialist doctor and is on the right track.”

Angela Preston, fundraising manager for RNIB Scotland, said: “Ajwa’s efforts have been wonderful. Not only has she raised funds to support the Stirling CommunityTalking Book drive herself, she’s inspired others to take part and help ensure we can provide another accessible book for children with sight loss. ”
