Full throttle from Stuart

Charity match set to enthrall

- Donald Morton

Scotland squash internationalist Stuart George says there is no room for sentiment when he takes on his fellow internationalist Kevin Moran at Bridge of Allan Sports Club on Sunday in an exhibition match.

The meeting comes as part of Kevin’s Scottish tour, which the Commonwealth Games hero has undertaken in order to raise funds for his late sister’s charity Lisa’s Gift.

George, who made his full international debut earlier this year at the European championships, says he is determined to use the opportunity to post his first win against Moran.

The Scotland No.5 said: “Obviously it’s fantastic to be asked to provide the opposition for what is a very worthwhile cause. I think it’s also important to say Kev deserves a hell of a lot of credit for all the hard work he is doing on his tour to raise money for a cause dear to his heart and one that really seeks to help sport make a difference to disadvantaged kids.

“Over the years, Kevin and I have had a good few tussles and so far victory has eluded me but I am viewing this as the perfect opportunity to get the monkey off my back!

“I just hope that we get a good crowd of people along on Sunday to support Kevin and help him raise money for the charity. I can promise anyone who turns up that they will get two guys going at it hammer and tongs because I know how competitive Kevin is and he knows I’ve been gunning for him for some time!”

There has been some speculation that George has been approached by BofA squash bosses to become the club’s new No 1 for the forthcoming East campaign but the 23 yearold remained tight-lipped when asked.

He said: “The new season is a long way ahead from now and all that matters is putting the best performance on I can on Sunday night.

“Squash is just like any other sport, there is always speculation flying about, that’s what makes the game interesting domestically.

“Bridge of Allan are a great club and I’m sure they won’t be short of candidates to take up the No.1 spot should they look to fill it. In any case, they have a very strong No.1 right now in Andy MacBean, the Scotland over-35 international and top-20 stalwart.”

Turning back to Sunday’s 5pm attraction, what should make this encounter a classic is the pitting of George’s raw athleticism and all-action retrieving and the more dexterous subtle soft hands of Moran.
