BofA ladies pipped at post by Dunblane

-

Bridge of Allan ladies first team have been pipped at the post by neighbours Dunblane in their bid to win Central Scotland Division One.

The title battle went right to the wire as BofA defeated Dunblane 8-4 in a tense decider at Minewood thanks to a strong showing by top pairing of Abbie and Rosie Woodward, the number two partnership of Clare Woodward and V Reid, with Doreen Birnie and Heather Forsythe making up the third couple.

The match of the evening saw Abbie and Rosie managing a draw in an epic battle of the juniors against Dunblane’s top pairing of Kirsty Robertson and Eilidh Davidson, who hadn’t dropped a set all season.

But the 8-4 margin of victory for Bridge of Allan wasn’t enough to win the league, with both teams on equal points and Dunblane winning on set difference.

First team captain Clare Woodward said:“It’s been a fantastic season and with the championship going right to the final match we have come up just short.

“Credit to Dunblane, but we hope to come back stronger next season and hopefully go that step further.”

There was disappointment for the ladies second team who despite having several close matches and fighting hard until the end of the campaign finished fifth in Division 2 and will be demoted to Division 3 next season.

The final nail in the coffin came with a 9-3 defeat to a strong Dunblane second team who finished top of Division 2.

Meanwhile, the men’s first team ended the season on a high with a 10-2 home win against Livilands to finish in third place.

The men’s second team won 9-3 at Livilands 2nds to give themselves a chance of staying in Division 2 if they can win at Falkirk 2nds in their final fixture.

In the Gillespie Cup mixed doubles knockout tournament the BofA team of Scott Lister and Abbie Woodward were in outstanding form a winning their four sets for the loss of only one game against Falkirk.
