More residents in a flap over crows

Cars and solar panels attacked

- Chris Marzella

Residents in another Stirling street say they have been terrorised by crows.

Those living in Lothian Crescent, in Causewayhead, claim to have come under siege from the troublesome birds for the last four years. On Friday the Observer told how residents in Maurice Avenue have also been terrorised by a flock of the same birds.

Lothian Crescent resident Pamela Dow said until reading the article in the Stirling Observer, homeowners there thought they were the only ones to be targeted by the birds. Two crows are believed to have been attacking cars, solar panels and skylights in the street.

Pamela said: “I’m currently on a second set of window wipers at £40 a set and have to either wrap the wipers in kitchen towels or leave the wipers in the up position so they can’t peck the rubber seals. This doesn’t stop the squawking at sunrise or the noise the bird makes on my neighbour’s solar panels or skylight on the roof of their house as they slide up and down all day, squawking at their reflection.

“I have even witnessed the crow scratching up and down the side window on my car leaving marks all over the glass, and on occasions when the bird has no luck, it starts flying into the side of our cars squawking and pecking with its beak. And it seems to be training up a young crow to do the same. This affects around six houses, all next to each other, and some of the neighbours have even tried deterrents – such as owl ornaments.”

The Observer’s wildlife correspondent, Keith Graham, says that the birds have been known to attack reflective surfaces to mark their territory.

He said: “The likely explanation is that they are attacking their own reflections, thinking of them as rivals for either territory or mates.”
