Pupils to keep up their reading over summer

- Staff reporter

An initiative aimed at getting children to keep up their reading over the summer has been launched in Stirling.

Stirling Libraries’ Mischief Makers scheme was launched at Blair Drummond Safari Park last week.

It is run by national charity the Reading Agency in partnership with Scotland’s libraries and Tesco Bank.

The challenge involves children reading six books during the summer holidays, a time when children’s literacy skills traditionally dip if they don’t have regular access to books and encouragement to read for pleasure.

Each year the Reading Agency and libraries create a new theme for the Challenge.

The theme for this year’s scheme is‘mischief makers’ which builds on the work being done by the Reading Agency and libraries with Beano in its 80th anniversary year.

And it will feature one of Scotland’s favourite mischief makers, Dennis the Menace, along with Gnasher and friends.

Children who take part in the challenge and complete it will be able claim free entry to some of Stirling’s tourist and leisure venues such as Blair Drummond Safari Park, Peak, McLaren Leisure, University of Stirling and Bellrock Balfron Campus.

Children wishing to take part in the challenge should visit their nearest library and start reading and collecting the ‘rewards’ they need to gain free entry to the attractions.
