Over £2000 raised for Mental Health

- Kaiya Marjoribanks

Former pupils of two local schools have raised £2100 after pulling on their football boots for charity.

For the past six years the Stirling High and Bannockburn High School classes of 2012 have held a reunion game of football followed by a trip to the pub, with around 30 people taking part every year plus spectators.

This year’s match was played at Stirling High School followed by an after-match celebration at The Foresters Arms in Cambusbarron.

The players decided to double their normal match fee and donate the proceeds to the Scottish Association for Mental Health and more money was added to the fundraising pot thanks to a raffle supported by a host of local businesses.

The match finished 2-2 with Stirling High winning 4-2 on penalties.

Organiser Calum Davidson said: “It was a fantastic day and I am so proud to say that we raised a total of £2100 in aid of the Scottish Association for Mental Health.

“The scorers for Stirling were Andrew Hastings and Jamie Benson, and for Bannockburn Lewis Brunton and David Cross. This means that after seven years of playing the match, Stirling High are up 4-3 on games.

“The raffle was then held at the Foresters Arms, with a buffet provided by MLK Catering.”

The charity was chosen by the players in a bid to raise both money and awareness for a cause which they felt deserved increased recognition.

Calum added: “We have all seen the unfortunate statistics that tell us 84 men take their own life in the UK every week and that suicide is the biggest killer of men under 45. We recognise the hard work this charity does to beat the stigma surrounding mental health and to support people who live with mental health issues.

“We wanted to do our bit to raise money for them.”
