‘What-E’er Thou Art, Act Well Thy Part’ it spurred him on in his missionary work.

More than 60 years later when Albany Crescent, which had sat below Mote Hill by Back o’ Hill Road, was being demolished two Mormon missionaries asked the demolition company to save the stones.

One, the ‘magic square stone’ which includes the adage spotted by Elder McKay was shipped to mission headquarters in Salt Lake City. The location of the original lion rampant stone is unknown.

The unveiling at the Smith last week was attended by Stirling Provost Christine Simpson, Stirling MP Stephen Kerr and Elder Jeffrey R Holland of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles from the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-day Saints.

Mr Kerr, a member of the church, who worked closely with the museum and project manager Mandy Watson on the project, said: “When the director of the Smith talked to me about how important these carvings were to the Stirling area I wanted to do my best to try and see if we could get exact replicas produced for exhibition in the museum.

“I am delighted they are now on permanent display and add to the rich history that the Smith cares for on our behalf.

“I would also like to acknowledge the superb workmanship of James Innes and Sons that has produced these exceptional replicas.”
