Dollar pupils come of age at Festival Fringe
Next month, Dollar Academy pupils are putting on their production of 13, the musical by Tony Award-winning composer Jason Robert Brown, as a part of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe programme.
The production is part of the school’s bicentenary celebrations having been founded in 1818 by Captain John McNabb and the cast is made up entirely of pupils in forms I, II and III (none of them older than 13) and produced by assistant rector Simon Burbury and director of music Karol Fitzpatrick. “The pupils have already been rehearsing hard, the set is slowly being built, costume items are being collected,” said Simon. “It promises to be a great show and a wonderful experience for the pupils.”
The hilarious, coming-of-age musical about discovering that “cool” is sometimes where we least expect it. Geek, poseur, jock, beauty queen or wannabe - these are the labels that can last a lifetime.
Evan Goldman is plucked from his fast-paced, preteen New York City life and plopped into a sleepy Indiana town following his parents’ divorce.
Surrounded by an array of simple- minded middle school students, he needs to establish his place in the popularity pecking order.
Can he situate himself on a comfortable link of the food chain... or will he dangle at the end with the outcasts?
With an unforgettable rock score from Tony Award-winning composer, Jason Robert Brown, 13 is a musical about fitting in – and standing out and the Broadway production is notable for being the professional debut of Ariana Grande and Elizabeth Gillies who would later go on to star together in the television series Victorious.
This talented cast is comprised entirely of teenagers, but the stories that come to life here are ageless, the emotions they explore timeless, the laughter and the memories they provide priceless.
