Jamie chases double doubles

-

Jamie Murray’s love affair with the mixed doubles at Wimbledon is continuing after an amazing second round match on Monday evening.

Last week the 32 year-old Dunblane star intimated that he wouldn’t be defending the title he won 12 months ago with Martina Hingis but a last-minute U-turn saw him team up with Belarus star Victoria Azarenka.

Having won back in 2007 with Jelena Jankovic, Murray is looking for his third Wimbledon win with a third different partner.

The duo started off with a first round win over Czech couple Roman Jebavy and Lucie Hradecka, coming from a set down to win 6-7 6-4 6-4.

But on Monday it looked like their hopes had disappeared when they trailed 5-1 in the final set to No. 7 seeds Robert Farah (Colombia) and Anna-Lena Groenefeld (Germany).

As the light started to fade at SW19, the Murray/Azarenka partnership refused to give up and reeled off six successive games to clinch the match 7-7 6-7 7-5 in two hours 41 minutes.

In round three they are up against No.13 seeds Matwe Middelkoop (Holland) and Johanna Larsson (Sweden).

In the men’s doubles, Jamie and his partner Bruno Soares (Brazil) are the highest-ranked seeds left at the quarter-final stage. The No.5 seeds haven’t dropped a set so far having beaten Paolo Lorenzi (Italy) and Albert Ramos-Vinolas (Spain) 7-5 62 6-1 in round one and Matthew Ebden (New Zealand) and Taylor Fritz (USA) 7-5 6-3 6-1 in the second round.

On Monday, British brothers Ken and Neal Skupski went down 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 as they sealed a quarter-final spot against No.13 seeds Raven Klaasen (South Africa) and Michael Venus (New Zealand).

Murray and Soares are hoping to go one better than their 2015 runners-up spot and were due on Centre Court against Klaasen and Venue yesterday (Tuesday).
