A councillor has called for more to be done to remove drunks from Stirling city centre.

Tory Douglas Dodds, who is vice chairperson of Stirling Licensing Board, hit out after witnessing an incident on Monday.

He said: “I saw at least 15 males and one female drinking from cans and bottles in a little alcove area located in Murray Place.

“All were clearly intoxicated and shouting at others further up the road. They were purchasing more alcohol from a nearby shop.”

Councillor Dodds, Tory representative for Dunblane and Bridge of Allan, reported the matter to police and is awaiting a response .

“I would like to know what positive steps are being taken in the city centre to remove drunken groups from our streets,” he added.

“At the height of the summer with visitors and residents enjoying Stirling this type of behaviour is all too frequent and gives an appalling impression to all who witness it.”

He said the problems of drunks hanging about the town centre was raised at the city’s Licensing Forum last week.

Stirling-based Inspector Anton Stephenson confirmed a call had been made on Monday about people drinking in Murray Place.

He added: “Officers were on the scene within minutes and engaged with the group.

“No persons were found to be drunk or under the influence of alcohol and there was no evidence of any alcohol use and no offences were being committed. “
