Demand foranswers on pricing structure

- Robert Fairnie

Stirling MSP Bruce Crawford wrote a letter to the chief executive of Vue to express his concern over the pricing policy – but admits he has been left disappointed with their response.

Mr Crawford is backing the Observer’s campaign calling for the cinema chain to reduce prices in the city so they are in-line with other movie theatres around the country. In a statement, Vue said last week that, in common with many retail and leisure businesses they operate a“dynamic pricing policy”.

The cinema chan added:“Every site has a range of fixed and variable costs that must be taken into account when determining prices in their local market. To ensure everyone can enjoy the big screen experience at all of our locations we are committed to providing customers with discounted ticket opportunities and offers, including Super Mondays and Mini Mornings.”

However Mr Crawford said he wanted answers and added: “I wrote to the chief executive of Vue Cinemas asking for a detailed reason as to why Stirling is priced to be the most expensive cinema in the country.

“I am disappointed that the response I received did not respond to the specific concerns that I raised, namely that there is such disparity between what Vue expects consumers to pay for a cinema ticket here in Stirling, compared to elsewhere across Scotland. I fully commend the efforts of the Observer on raising this matter, and support the petition calling for Vue to seriously reconsider their position here.

“Businesses have to listen to the people that they rely on the support of, and I would urge local people who feel the same way I do about these absurdly high prices to make their voices heard and support the Observer’s campaign.”

Last week Mr Crawford said that there was“absolutely no reason whatsoever for Stirling Vue to be the most expensive in Scotland”.

Stirling MP Stephen Kerr also said he wanted the cinema chain to explain why, in detail, people in Stirling have to pay more money than others for the same ticket.
