End in sight for gas pipe works

Three months later than planned

- Chris Marzella

Roadworks in Stirling are nearing completion – almost three months after they were expected to be finished.

A series of roads in and around Coneypark are undergoing £270,000 worth of gas pipe upgrades in a number of streets.

But hold–ups mean the work – being carried out by gas network company SGN – and was supposed to be completed by May, won’t now be finished until the end of this week.

SGN spokesman Dan Brown said: “Due to adverse weather conditions at the start of the year, our work in the Coneypark area was delayed.

“However, our project is progressing well and we’re continuing to carry out network upgrades in Coneypark, Grampian Road and Birkhill Road.

“We’d like to apologise for any inconvenience caused and thank residents and motorists for their continued patience as we carry out this essential work.”

During the six-phase upgrade, old gas mains have been replaced with new plastic piping, with a minimum 80-year lifespan, to ensure a safe and reliable gas supply.

Phase one of the work started at the junction of Polmaise Road and Kenningknowes Road and progressed along Kenningknowes Road to number 10.

The second phase started in January and continued along the side of Kenningknowes Road in sections from number 10 to 59, with work on the verge near the footpath leading to Grampian Road also being carried out.

A third phase along the other side of Kenningknowes Road, from numbers 48 to 91, where the road meets the footpath to Coneypark was carried out.

Phase four continued in Coneypark and progressed along the street to the junction with Birkhill Road while during the fifth phase pipes were replaced in Grampian Road, starting near the footpath to Kenningknowes Road and continuing northward towards the Birkhill Road junction.

In the final phase of the project, pipes were uplifted and replaced in Birkhill Road from the junction with Douglas Terrace to the bridge on the M9.
