Sewer flood remedy is on the way

- Robert Fairnie

Stirling Council is waiting for investigations into sewer flooding in a Dunblane street to be completed before taking steps to remedy the problem.

The Observer reported on Friday that both the authority and Scottish Water had been communicating with residents in Claredon Place over properties they believe may be at risk of internal flooding.

Houses there have for around five years suffered internal flooding and news that progress was being made to address the issue was welcomed during a meeting of Dunblane Community Council last week.

Stirling council believes increasing the size of a combine surface water sewer would ease the problem and they are keen to install extra gullies in the meantime to help reduce the risk it poses.

However they need to wait for Scottish Water to complete its investigation into the issue before acting.

A council spokesperson said: “Scottish Water has identified that their combine surface water sewer needs upsizing and we are working towards a solution to help residents.

“We are keen to help residents by installing additional gullies but this will not resolve the problem until Scottish Water carry out preparation work. We are awaiting further direction from Scottish Water on how we can further assist.”

Councillor Graham Houston told last week’s community council meeting that teams had been out knocking doors and speaking with residents to inform them of the developments.

Those living in the area has been asked to provide information and share their experiences – and it is hoped that this will inform the future steps taken.

It is believed that the solution will be identified in September and the funding will be in place by the end of the year, with ambitions to start the works next year.

Councillor Houston said: “The solution is not quite in the offing just yet, but is being progressed.”

A spokesperson for Scottish Water last week said: “We are investigating sewer flooding in the Claredon Place area of Dunblane to get a full understanding of the scale and nature of the problem.

“On completion of these investigations, we will work to establish if there is a possible solution that would reduce the risk of flooding there.”

Community councillor David Prescott wants work to be done to reduce the flooding risk throughout the whole of Dunblane.

He added: “It’s important that we maintain the existing drainage system. Can we ask the council to come down before the autumn and clear out the blocked gullies and have a good go at the whole town.”
