Man persuadedto come down

- Chris Marzella

The A9 was closed for around six hours as emergency services attempted to talk the unidentified man down.

He man could be seen sitting and standing on the edge of the roof of flats at the junction of Main Street and Quakerfield.

The road was closed at around 8am and not reopened until shortly before 2pm.

A man could be seen sitting on the slate

roof, around 30 feet from the ground, with a foot in the guttering to balance himself. A skylight window was open and at least one other person could be seen moving around inside.

The man on the roof could be heard shouting to police on the street below and began to wave roof tiles as he became agitated.

One person, who did not wish to be named, said:“He was up there for hours, standing on that gutter. It was quite nerve-wracking, seeing him moving around on it. I expected the gutter to give way a few times.”

Scores of police were present, with a heavy presence in front of Bruno’s Take Away and the Radio Music Store, and firefighters were on standby in nearby East Murrayfield. The street was blocked off between the junction of Station Road and the Empire Bar and traffic heading to Bannockburn from Stirling was redirected along Morrison Drive and towards Whins of Milton.

Crowds gathered to watch from behind the police cordon and from Ladywell Park.

Concerned friends attempted to talk the man down.

Following the impasse the man was eventually convinced to make his way to safety.

An eyewitness said:“The guy came off the roof after a scary moment. He tried to climb back in the window but slipped back down to the gutter and part of it snapped. He managed to get back in at the second attempt.”

A police spokesperson said: “The incident has been resolved and a man has been taken to hospital for assessment, with no further police action required.

“Road closures have been lifted and the public are thanked for their patience.”
