Bowlers take title more than 40 years after last victory

Borestone bowlers ended a long wait on Sunday to win the City of Stirling Top Fifteen title.

On a rain soaked Dunblane green they saw off the challenge from Stirling to find success – their last win being back in 1977 – the first year of the competitio­n!

Sunday’s rain delayed final was keenly contested, with Borestone running out deserved winners with eight points and 110 shots to Stirling’s four points and 89 shots. The popular event was sponsored by Andrew Anderson and Sons, Funeral Directors and by J&W Builders Ltd.

Stirling’s first win came in the junior singles with Lee Neilson winning 21-18 against Daniel McCann.

In the fours Stirling’s W Nicol, B Weir, M Cruz and J Gilmour finished 23-12 ahead of P Brown, J Cheetham, J Kilgannon and J Hunter.

Kevan Frogley carded two valuable points for Borestone in the singles with a hard-earned 2118 victory over Lee McCormack.

In the senior fours contest Borestone’s D Bruce, J Kilgannon, N Boyle and B McLachlan emerged 17-8 winners over G Farquharso­n, F Mitchell, D Ross and S Kerr and another two points were added for Borestone in the triples with E Morrison, S Hogg and D Kerr finishing 2011 winners over D McKean, H Letford and P Neilson.

Completing the winning Borestone line up in style were N Lafferty and L Green in the pairs with a convincing 22-8 victory over T Hood and J McCabe. Stirling Stirling hosted their annual match with Doune Castle last Saturday and won by 28 shots. Scores (Stirling first): W Nicol 23-6 I Morrison; J McLachlan 14-14 H Robertson; M Cruz 8-19 J Wray; P Neilson 28-6 D Armstrong. Totals: Stirling 73-45 Doune Castle. Riverside Polmaise were the visitors to Riverside on Saturday for the annual match with the home side winning by five shots. Scores (Riverside skips first): Billy McLeod 8-14 Peter Smith; John Phimister 20-14 Robert Johnstone; Jim Kendall 16-7 Gary Malcolmson; John Millar 14-19 Peter Black. Totals: Riverside 5853 Polmaise.

The County Top 5 singles final will be held at Riverside tomorrow (Thursday) when Airthrey Spa meet Polmaise.
