The ethos of the show has always been the taking part rather than entering the largest potato or the lightest shortbread and there are many categories for both children and adults to enter. \Carron Valley

Community Open Day Going Forth for local produce and crafts’ will be the theme of the annual community open day tomorrow (Saturday) from noon-4pm at Craigend Farm, Auchenbowi­e. Organised by Valley Renewables Group, the local developmen­t trust, the event will feature a variety of stalls including mosaics, willow weaving, jewellery, local produce, flower arranging, recycling, University of Third Age and nature study. There will be children’s activities, a demonstrat­ion on using local produce and Mickey and Minnie Mouse are expected to attend around 2pm. A programme of talks will include demand responsive transport, archaeolog­ical investigat­ions and historic graveyards of Stirling. The open day will see the launch of the Carron Valley Community Woodland project and a discussion of the future of the Howietoun heritage site. Entrance and barbecue is free.

Organisers are hoping the change will give everyone more time for preparatio­n of entries which in turn will increase the number of entries to the show. Entries will be accepted at the community centre from 7-8pm tomorrow (Saturday)and Sunday from 7-9.45am when doors will close for judging. The centre opens at 1.45pm to the public, please do come along and support this event. Tea, coffee, home baking, sale of vegetables, flowers,and raffle prizes will all be available in the afternoon.

While everyone is invited to attend, voting, which will take place afterwards, is limited to those members and adherents whose name are on the kirk electoral register. The kirk will be open from 10am to facilitate the distributi­on of voting papers. Tea and coffee will be served in the halls after the service pending the outcome of the vote. Kirk Kids starts at 10.30am in a new format with a special DVD, and the creche is open as normal. Women’s Bible Study Group restarts in Katy’s house on Monday, August 27 at 1.15pm.

Mary’s Meals Mary’s Meals Day Scotland including stalls, entertainm­ent and inspiratio­nal stories, will be held in the Royal Concert Hall, Glasgow, on Sunday, September 8 at 2pm. Cappuccino Chatter On Wednesdays from 10.30-11.30am in the Church House. Reading Rooms The rooms are undergoing essential building repairs during the two weeks beginning August 20. Although it is hoped activities in the main room will be not be affected by disruption, only limited access will be available to other areas such as toilets and the kitchen. During that period, the front entrance will be closed. Kippen Heritage Many enjoyed the Heritage Trail last weekend, visiting the Reading Room and the Old Smiddy and Kirkyard at the Cross. Also on view this year in the Reading Room were the handsome Strathview Tennis Cup and the Tug O’War Trophy from the Kippen Highland Games, last held in 1939, and Bill Paul’s splendid replica of the WW2 Kippen made lifeboats. Although a burst water pipe had damaged the Summer Ice Room last week, play was still possible and on Sunday afternoon much laugher was heard as Stuart Thomson showed how, aided for a time by 87 year-old Rab McQueen, who recalled many happy nights of play “before Kippen was swamped by most cars”! Kippen Heritage is grateful for the support received and willingly accepts photos or items relating to the Kippen area at any time. The fun begins tonight (Friday) at 6pm with a family treasure hunt, starting at the community hall, followed at 7.30pm with a fun quiz and bingo night. BYOB, soft drinks and snacks will be available. Tomorrow the gala day starts at 11.30am with a fun run from the community hall. A pipe band procession will take place from the church hall to the South Common at 12.30pm with the grand opening at 12.45pm. At 1pm there is tug o’war (teams of six, both gents and ladies) and at 1.30pm Thornhill’s version of Taskmaster will be held. Bring along a quirky object to enter (value less than £1) and undertake activities and challenges around the gala. Tossing the sheaf is at 2pm and races at 3pm. The usual refreshmen­ts will be on offer including tea, SWI baking stall, Murray’s Beer tent and Puddingsto­ne’s Premium Gin and Prosecco Tent. Activities feature slide, football shooting, nerf gun target shooting and face painting.
