Stirling

Players from over 30 clubs across Scotland played in the Gents Senior Open. The CSS for home players was 70 and away players 72.

Whilst conditions were favourable and excellent putting surfaces, surprising­ly no one in the field of 126 could score 69 or better.

The top four prizes were all won by visitors whilst Stirling players dominated the age group categories.

John McLachlan (Kilmarnock Barassie) held off Robert Hogg (Linlithgow), Vic Allan (Dollar) and Barclay Wilkinson (Mortonhall) on the better inward half, all players returning net 71, to win the Swan Cup.

John had a mediocre front nine of 44 with only two pars on the card after a promising opening birdie. However, an excellent inward nine of three over par 39 included playing the last six holes in one over par.

Robert beat Vic on the better last six holes and Vic equalled the best scratch score of 75 won by Bobby Sneddon (Stirling). Barclay was fourth.

Linlitghgo­w’s John Tomlinson won the 55-63 age bracket with a mixed card including two treble bogey eights at the 7th and 13th but also birdies at the 1st, 3rd, 11th and 14th holes.

Dave Morrison held off Peter McGuigan (both Stirling) in the 64-68 age group for first place - both players on net 71. John Campbell pipped Bruce Hunter in the 69-plus age group, both players on net 71.

Dougie Jamard won the Morton Trophy - awarded to Stirling players with the best net score - in a tight finish with six other Stirling players - Willie Kerr, Ben Reynolds, David Morrison, Peter McGuigan, John Campbell and Bruce Hunter all on net 71.

Tam Pheely won the John Begg Trophy with a three stroke victory with an excellent eight under par net 64. After an outward nine of 40 Tam returned in two over par 38 with a great birdie at Cotton’s Fancy. Tam played the last five holes in level par with the only real blemish a double bogey at the short 6th hole tosecure his place at the annual prizegivin­g dinner on Friday, November 16. Alan Easton, Chris Seabrook and Andrew Ion were the nearest challenger­s, all on net 67. Thomas Moore, Russell Dalgleish, Alan Watson, Mark

Davidson, Andrew Wilson all returned net 68s with scratch player Jas Donaldson also on 68.

Both Jas and Ben Liddell’s scratch 70 narrowed the lead on Greg McLellan in the Presidents Cup - best five scratch scores of the season.

The inaugral Pro Day was played on Saturday in brilliant sunshine hosted by Kenny Monaghan with Assistants Mark O’Donnell and Scott Borrowman This was a fun day; the format was fourball betterball stableford with some unusual twists including Beat the Pro at 14th and three Power Play holes with two flags to improve or falter scores on these holes. Members and guests enjoyed food, drinks and entertainm­ent in the evening.

Prizewinne­rs were awarded excellent golf equipment and fourballs at fantastic courses with the winners going to Dundonald Links and runners up Leven GC.

Finally, congratula­tions to Alan Dryden who won the Bridge of Allan Gents Open on Saturday with a one over par 67. Bridge of Allan

On Saturday at Bridge of Allan the club hosted the annual Gents Open once again very kindly sponsored by Forbes Falconer and the Rising Sun. The fine weather held throughout

the day, and was compliment­ed by excellent course conditions that led to some great scoring.

Winner of the Rising Sun Trophy was Alan Dryden (Stirling) who returned a gross 67. Second was Roger Moore who scored a 70 and third was Stephen Brown on 72 (both Bridge of Allan).

In the handicap section Jim Crawford (Dunblane) teed off early in the morning and returned a net 64 that proved to be the winning score at the end of the day. Jim just pipped

Steven Burns (Grangemout­h) on the bih and third went to local player Ian Houston who returned a net 65.

Nearest the pin competitio­n was won by Roger Moore, closest drive to the line was won by Alloa Golf Club’s Ray Williamson and the three at the 1st draw winner was Dunblane New Golf Club’s Mike Bell.

In Friday’s Gents Senior, Raymond Aimer returned to the winner’s circle with his 20 point total and Tony Jackson and Ian Smith took second and third places respective­ly, both scoring 18 points. David Shaw scored the only two of the day to win the triple week twos pot. Stirling Seniors

Stirling Gents Seniors played their final match of the 2018 Central and Lothians Seniors League on August 21 away against Newbattle Golf Club. The match was played in an excellent spirit and following competitiv­e individual games, Stirling proved very strong overall and won the match by 6-0. This means that Stirling Seniors have won their league and big congratula­tions to all concerned. Well done to the old guys!

On a day where the weather was ideal for golf, warm, sunny and no wind, there was a full field representi­ng players from 48 different golf clubs in the Observer Trophy Open Mixed

Foursomes on Saturday. However despite the course being in pristine condition it appeared the course won the day with many high scores returned.

Winners of the Observer Trophy were Stewart Taylor (Dunblane New) and Ann Parker (Braehead) with the only score under 70, 68.5, off a handicap of 19.5.

Best scratch score was 77 returned from visitors from Bedale Golf Club in North Yorkshire, Andrew Lawrence and Gillian Petrie.

Having not had success for a number of years Ian Muir (Stirling) and Rhona Muir (Callander) returned to the winner’s enclosure with 70.5 off 15.5 to win the First Class. Runners up

were George Kirk (Glenbervie) and Alison Kirk (La Cala) on 71 off 16. Third place went to Ian and Rhona Glen, who returned to Dunblane for the competitio­n from York, with 71.5 off 14.5.

Fourth place went to mother and son pairing of Andrew and Mary Thomson (Dunblane New) on 72 off 15.

The Second Class was won by brother and sister pairing of Gordon and Maureen Foster (Dunblane New) on 70 off 22. Second place went to John and Frances Stirk (Glenearn and Dunbracken) on 71 off 23. Two couples the returned 71.5, with both off 19.5, but third place went to Jim Sloan and Joy Gordon (Dunblane New) with bih than Steve and Karen McGeouch from Pumphersto­n.

On Friday and Saturday will be the September Monthly Medal. On Sunday the AG Kinnes Invitation Fourball will be played.

Central AC’s Robb Ferguson was on top form as he took a brace of bronze medals at the Scottish under 13 championsh­ips.

He started with the 75m hurdles where he has been competing well this season and produced a strong run to finish in third place with 13.41s.

He then took on the javelin event where he has also shown great progress this season and an excellent second round throw of 29.09m was enough to add another bronze medal to make it a great weekend for him - his first medals at a national level event.

Several other of Central’s athletes made the long trip to Aberdeen to test themselves against the best in Scotland and were rewarded with personal bests. Connor Bell took on the 1500m race and ran an excellent pb 4:35.68 to finish just outside the medals in fourth. Picture: Bobby Gavin

Hannah Tams has made excellent progress recently and was competing in her first ever championsh­ips. She was undaunted by the occasion in the 100m as she qualified through the heats

in 14.25 then semi-finals in 14.17 to reach the final. She went even faster running an official pb 14.02 for seventh place and followed this up in the long jump where she jumped 3.80m for ninth place.

Brogan McMillan smashed her personal best by eight cms in the high jump clearing 1.32m to place ninth and earn herself a bronze standard on the club awards scheme. She then

placed sixth in her 1500m heat with 5:49.68.

Jamie Oldham set a pb 2:29.46 in the 800m for second place in his heat then ran 31.76 in the 200m.

Emily Guest was unfortunat­e not to progress in the 100m where she ran 14.55

in her heat to miss a semifinal spot by just one place. She then ran a fine 30.72 in the 200m.
