Swimming coach Steven is going to great lengths

-

The cream of Scottish sport will again be recognised at the Sunday Mail and sportscotland Scottish Sports Awards in December and University of Stirling swimming coach Steven Tigg could be in the running for more award glory.

Now in its 12th year, the annual event which is sponsored by – the national agency for sport – celebrates excellence throughout Scottish sport by awarding our sportsmen, women, teams and volunteers for their outstanding achievements in 2018.

And among those likely to be in contention is the Head Performance Swimming Coach at the University of Stirling, who was last year named High Performance Coach of the Year at the Coaching, Officiating and Volunteering Awards.

Tigg landed the award after helping guide the careers of champion swimmers such as Duncan Scott, who was one of the stars of Gold Coast 2018 and Glasgow 2018, Dan Wallace and Stephen Milne among many others.

But he says the rewards of his job stretch beyond just seeing his swimmers on the podium at major games.

He said: “Probably the biggest thing for me is taking a younger athlete, someone who has come into the programme in the first year with that pressure and to see them develop their level of performance alongside their academics and to see them meet the goals that they set out at the start of the season. It is always really rewarding because we know how much work they put in.”

Tigg, who alongside Ben Higson won the Coach of the Year Award at the 2016 Sunday Mail and Scottish Sport Awards, could well be in the hunt for more awards at the Doubletree by Hilton Glasgow Central in December.

Chair of Mel Young, said: “It has been another fantastic year for sport in Scotland. Scottish athletes continue to shine on the world stage as the record-breaking medal tally at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games and some great results at the 2018 European Championships demonstrated.

“There is terrific work being done by the sporting community across the country to increase the opportunities for as many people as possible to take part in sport. It is wonderful to have another chance to recognise such dedicated and hard-working people alongside Scotland’s elite athletes.”
