Killearn super pulls out all th

- Chris Marzella

From beetroot to turnips, babywear to patchwork, dahlias to sweet peas and chocolate cake to scones, the Killearn Cottagers’ Horticultural Society (KCHS) show had everything last Saturday.

Wet weather during the week did not dampen the spirit of the exhibitors, who pulled out all the stops to guarantee another successful show with young piper Murray O’May bringing in the public to the 152nd show.

Chairman John Phillips welcomed everyone and introduced Ian Dickie, editor of the Killearn Courier newsletter, to open the show.

The prize giving followed, with trophies heading to Balfron, Buchlyvie, Thornhill and other villages in the area.

Killearn residents received their share of the trophies, with Heather Wright receiving no fewer than three for her work in the floral art and craft sections.

A new trophy this year was in the art section for best exhibit. The inscribed quaich was given by Des Burt and friends in memory of his late wife Sandra, who was a KCHS committee member.

The winner of the quaich was Audrey Wallace from Balfron. Most points in section went to Heather Wright.

In a vegetables and fruit section that saw several new exhibitors receiving prize tickets experienced grower Norman McBean, from Thornhill, not only won three trophies for his high standard of vegetables shown but also received best exhibit for his gladioli.

The moment of the day was when children from Strathblane Primary realised that their misshapen carrot had won a prize.

The Gordon Trophy for basket of plenty was won by John Phillips.

This year the Quinloch Decanter for best exhibit in horticulture was given to the exhibit of sweet peas displayed by Drew Watson from Kirkintilloch.

Another winner in the cut flower section was John Phillips, who received the Tom Robbie Trophy for the most points in the dahlia classes.

The George Wilson Cup for best exhibit in roses went to David McIlroy, the Blair Trophy for most points in cut flowers went to Janice McLaren.

Killearn exhibitor David Houston won best exhibit and most points in the pot plant section.
