Soldier who signed up twice is killed

-

A Fallin soldier who bravely re-enlisted after being discharged from the Army was killed in action.

Pte James Ging, A&SH, who died on July 2, was a member of a family which made a major contribution to the war effort.

James was 27 and the son of the late Michael Ging, egg dealer, Broad Street, Stirling.

He worked as a miner in Fallin before joining Scottish Horse at the outbreak of war.

He was discharged as being medically unfit for service but offered to join the Argylls and was accepted. He went on to spend twoand-a-half years in France and was wounded twice.

James’ younger brother Daniel, who also worked as a miner in Fallin, enlisted in the A&SH in November 1914.

In July 1915 he was sent to France and was posted missing in September of that year. He was later presumed to have been killed at that time.

Their elder brother Michael a reservist, joined his old regiment King’s Own Scottish Borderers at the outbreak of war.

He was wounded at the Battle of Mons and taken to a hospital in Ostend where, following its capture by the Germans, he became a prisoner of war.

He spent two years incarcerated in Germany and another in Switzerland but following his release he returned to service with the Royal Army Medical Corp.

The three also had two brothersin-law who were serving with the A&SH.

Another family in mourning was that of Pte David Hunter, Black Watch, following his death from gastritis at a base hospital in France.

The Observer said he was for many years employed in the parcel department of the Caledonian Railway Company in Stirling and in Crieff.

He was assistant manager at Crieff Picture House when he enlisted three years earlier.

Pte Hunter took part in a good deal of fighting and was awarded the Military Medal for gallantry in the field in autumn 1917.

Pte Hunter, who was married and lived in Crieff, was the fifth son of Mrs Hunter, Seaforth Place, Stirling.

His had been killed in the war some months earlier and another brother, Pte Robert Hunter, outdoor assistant, Stirling Parish Council, was still in the Army.
