Plenty of reasons to warm to our wood burning stoves
A recent media report detailed how wood burning stoves are suffocating cities at an alarming rate, threatening to wipe out progress in reducing air pollution.
The report covered allwoodburning from open fires in homes to bonfires, barbecues and garden firepits.
However, as always there is no smoke without fire.
An open fire burning wood or coal has an efficiency of less than 15 per cent and has no control over the carbon emissions that it emits.
A new wood burning stove has an efficiency of approximately 80 per cent.
This is a dramatic improvement on an old open coal fire, which can be as low as 10 per cent.
Properly seasoned wood, in an industry approved stove, is one of the most environmentally friendly fuels that can be used to heat our homes,” states Andrew from Athena Fireplaces and Stoves, Stirling.
In the UK current sales of woodburning stoves are running at around 175,000 per annum. All new stoves have to pass very stringent tests regarding efficiency and emissions, and Athena recommend that your stove is supplied and fitted by experts that are HETAS approved.
HETAS, who are the governing body for solid fuel fires in the UK, recommend only burning seasoned timber (moisture content below 17per cent) in stoves.
This guarantees keeping the emissions as low as possible but also gives more heat from the fuel.
Higher particle pollution dangers occur when some owners use their fires improperly, burning coal, unseasoned (wet) wood or timber that has been treated with chemicals and pallets etc.
Having a stove installed will provide you with much more than a decorative centrepiece for your room, greatly increasing both the efficiency and warmth of your home as well as saving you a lot of money in the long run.
