Coirilidh is golden girl

Central AC’s young athletes were in medal winning form at the recent Scottish age group championship in Aberdeen.

Balfron teenager Coirilidh Cook was never challenged as she ran away with the Under-15 girls 75m hurdles in 11.45s for gold.

This completes the set of Scottish titles for the 14-year-old, winning the Scottish national and Scottish schools titles both indoors and out this season.

In the same age range, Scott Hopper took on the javelin, having won the under-13 Scottish title last year and the under-14 Scottish schools title earlier in the summer.

The 13-year-old from Callander looked at one point like he might win after a superb personal best opening throw of 41.47m.

In the end he was just pipped for the title with two athletes beating his mark, the eventual winner outthrowing Scott by a slender margin of 21cms. However, Scott was still proud of a bronze medal.

Earlier he showed his versatility with a respectable fifth place in the high jump with 1.59m.

Matt Chandler was on medal winning form in the Under-20s.

The 17 year-old decathlete from Balfron competed in the high jump and pole vault, winning silver in the former and breaking his club record in the latter.

In the high jump he looked in good form as he cleared every height up to 1.87m to guarantee a medal. He was then facing a new personal best at 1.92m which he soared over at the second attempt to move himself into second place.

He returned the following day to take on the pole vault where there was a high class field with every athlete having a personal best of 4.20m or higher.

Matt had successively improved the club junior record this year several times taking it to 4.31m and he successfully cleared up to 4.17m before attempting another club record height of 4.32m which he cleared after two failed attempts.

He was unable to clear 4.47m and had to settle for fourth place on countback but a bronze medal and club record meant he was happy.

Balfron’s Anna Cameron competed in the Under-20 long jump but was unable to match the 5.55m she jumped back in June to win the Scottish Schools title and had to settle for seventh with 4.97m.

In the Under-15s, Strathyre’s Euan Wilbert came close to the medals in the 80m hurdles. A time of 12.83 earned the 13 year-old fourth and he followed it up with 4.88m for seventh in the long jump. Picture: Bobby Gavin.

Molly Cornes from Balfron was competing in the jumping events. A height of 1.49m was good enough for fifth in the high jump where the top two set a championship record.

She then set a personal best in the long jump, leaping to 4.84m for seventh.

Matilda Ross came seventh in the shot (6.06m), Ethan Thomson was fourth in his 100m (13.87) and set a pb in the 800m (2.26.76) and Cameron Kerr narrowly missed out on reaching the 1500m final after a fine run of 4.58.42 in his heat.
