Jamie’s joy at sealing place in the mixed doubles final
Jamie Murray is looking for his sixth Grand Slam doubles title after reaching the US Open mixed doubles final with American partner Bethanie Mattek-Sands.
He clocked up two men’s doubles wins with Brazilian Bruno Soares in 2016 — including victory at Flushing Meadows.
His run in the men’s with Soares ended surprisingly when unseeded pair Radu Albot (Moldova) and Malek Jaziri (Tunisia) beat them losing 7-5 6-4.
Later in the day, he had the chance to redeem himself and with Mattek-Sands, beat American duo Christina McHale and Christian Harrison in a championship tie-break, coming through 6-4, 2-6, 10-8 — the second consecutive championship tie-break win.
The 32 year-old Dunblane ace will now defend the title he won last year with Martina Hingis, meeting Poland’s Alicja Rosolska and Croatia’s Nikola Mektic in Saturday’s final.
“I’m really excited to win. To lose both matches would have been tough,”said Jamie afterwards.
“But the chance to get into a Grand Slam final again was a big motivation for me and I’m really looking forward to the match.”
Meanwhile wheelchair basketball star Gordon Reid, who trains at Stirling University, was due on court yesterday (Thursday) in the doubles with GB colleague Alfie Hewett against Gustavo Fernandez (Argentina) and Shingo Kuneida (Japan).
Gordon also meets Fernandez in the singles.
