Splendid conduct

A member of a patriotic Cambusbarron family was awarded the Military Medal (pictured).

Pte Tom Goodwin, Black Watch, son of James Goodwin, Alma House, received the honour for bravery in France. The 31-year-old former Scone Palace gardener had been on the Western Front for three years.

Six brothers enlisted shortly after the outbreak of war. Two of Pte Goodwin’s brothers were serving in France while another was with British forces in Italy.

Sgt Robert Goodwin, Gordon Highlanders, who was working in a Gartmore saw mill when war broke out, gained the Military Medal with two bars. He was with the Military Police in Italy.

Pte W Cameron, A&SH, was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal.

During an attack he acted as a runner between the front line and headquarters of the support company. Over a period of a day while moving across open ground he managed to dodge machine gun and sniper fire.

When night fell and enemy shells rained down his company commander sent him to a post 300 yards away. On arrival he found the platoon officer had just been killed and the enemy were about to advance. He fired a signal which directed Allied artillery fire to the point of the enemy attack.

“His prompt action prevented the situation becoming very serious,”said the medal citation. “Throughout the day his conduct was splendid.”
