Volunteers who restored garden in line for award
A project to restore the Japanese Garden at Cowden Castle has been shortlisted for a Scottish Heritage award.
Those behind the restoration are up for a gong at SH’s Angel awards aimed at those who have gone above and beyond in their efforts to promote, protect and, in many cases, rescue Scotland’s heritage.
Sara Stewart of the Japanese Garden will join the other finalists at the awards ceremony on October 22 at Glasgow City Chambers.
The awards are run by the Scottish Civic Trust with Historic Environment Scotland and Archaeology Scotland.
Director of the Scottish Civic Trust Susan O’Connor, said: ”It really is inspiring to see put forward such a diverse range of projects from all over Scotland.’’
Judges who will determine the winners includes representatives from the Heritage Lottery Fund and Young Scot. They will be joined by a variety of experts in the heritage field.
The Japanese Garden upgrade has been shortlisted in the‘best rescue of a historic building or place (for projects under £2m)’category.
Restoration of the world-renowned garden at Cowden Castle estate between Dollar and Muckhart was been carried out by a team led by Japanese garden designer Professor Masao Fukuhara. It opened to the public in July for the first time in decades.
