Jamie win ensures GB seeded in Davis Cup

Jamie Murray helped Great Britain wrap up a home Davis Cup victory that could see them on the brink of scoring a ‘wildcard’ for next year’s revamped competitio­n.

The 32–year old was in fine form on the back of victory at the US open. He helped guide GB to the win after he and doubles partner, Dom Inglot, swept aside Uzbekistan pair, Denis Istomin and Sanjar Fayziev 4-6, 7-6, 6-2, 6-3 at Glasgow’s Emirates Arena on Saturday.

The win saw GB secure a 3-1 victory over the visitors – ensuring that Britain will be seeded in the revamped Davis Cup when it starts in February.

The Dunblane ace and his partner Inglot came rallied to come from behind and secure the win,

Initially the Brits looked to be struggling, coming within a point of a two–set deficit.

But the battling Brits somehow managed to pinch the second–set tie–break from Istomin and Fayziev as the match swung in their favour.

The win put GB 2–1 up and it was British number– two Cameron Norrie who wrapped up the crucial win when he defeated Sanjar Fayziev 6-2, 6-2, 6-0 to win the tie 3–1.

It could potentiall­y be the last match for a while that the Murray’s play at the venue which has become a regular for Davis Cup ties. Under the revamped tournament, games would be played at a neutral venue.

Speaking after his win, Jamie said: “I’ve had some amazing ties here. The whole team loves coming back for the incredible support. A huge thank you to you guys. We hope we get the chance to come back.”

He added: “We were fighting hard in the first couple of sets but couldn’t quite find a break.

“We were so close to being two sets to love down, then we relaxed a bit and played really well in the last two sets.”

Younger brother Andy and British number–one Kyle Edmund both missed out due to injury.
