Wedding couple are first to cross
Stirling couple Stephen Straiton and Emily Postlethwaite were planning a low-key wedding until they got a call from the city’s registry office staff.
The pair, who live in St Ninians, were asked if they wanted to take part in the Kerse Bridge re-opening ceremony and be the first members of the public to cross the bridge by car.
Former Stirling University student Emily, 27, originally from Southport, told the Observer:“We were not making a big deal out of the wedding but decided to take part because we thought it would make it special and a good way of remembering the wedding and the day.”
The couple glided over the bridge in a BMW convertible shortly after 2pm on Friday before exchanging their vows at the city’s registry office at 3.30pm.
Members of Emily’s family travelled up from England to attend the wedding and her five-year-old daughter Sophie, who has just started at St Ninians Primary, was flower girl.
Emily and Stephen, a 30-year-old bus driver with First, had known each other for six years but been together as a couple for 18 months.
Emily, who works at a call centre, said:“The day went quickly and taking part in the bridge ceremony probably helped save us from getting stressed.
“It was something different and we will always remember our wedding day when we drive over the bridge.”
