Concern over speeding motorists

- Warren Hardie

A majority of cars on a Dunblane road used by schoolchildren were speeding, according to a survey.

Cars were over the limit as they entered Dunblane heading towards the Wallace Road/Doune Road/ Grant Drive junction frequented by both primary and secondary children on their way to school.

The speed limit on part of the road was increased to 40mph to act as a buffer zone as cars entered or left the 60mph area of the road.

A seven-day traffic survey carried out by Stirling Council showed on average over 57 per cent of vehicles were speeding in the 30mph zone with 85 per cent travelling at 35mph.

Julie Cowie, a Bridge of Allan resident, had initially raised the safety concerns with Dunblane and Bridge of Allan Tory councillor Alastair Majury.

She said:“As the stretch of road between the Dunblane Primary School entrance and the Dunblane boundary is straight, I have often observed cars travelling at more than the permitted 30mph.

“Traffic calming measures along with a safe crossing point would seem a necessity both to deter speeding and ensure the road is safer for all concerned.”

Councillor Majury said: “The level of speeding in this area that is well used by schoolchildren is concerning, and I have raised this with matter with the road safety engineers, and I believe that it is also time for the 40mph buffer zone to be removed and returned to the original 30mph limit.

“I would urge all drivers to slow down and think of pedestrian safety.”
