POLL IN FAVOUR OF PEOPLE VOTE

-

A majority of Bridge of Allan residents polled on Brexit backed a‘people’s vote’ on on the final deal.

Residents were asked on Saturday in Bridge of Allan by Scottish Liberal Democrats to place a sticker on either ‘agree’,‘don’t know’or‘disagree’on a board containing questions about Brexit.

Using their‘Brexitometer’to gauge residents’opinions, they found that 79 per cent of those quizzed supported a second referendum on the Brexit deal.

A majority, 49 per cent of those asked, disagreed that Theresa May’s deal is the best for the UK with only nine per cent backing the deal.

The‘Brexitometer’also found that 92 per cent of residents would vote to remain in the EU in the event of a ‘people’s vote’.

A majority, 49 per cent of those asked, disagreed that Theresa May’s deal is the best for the UK with only nine per cent backing the deal.

A total of 125 people answered the question on whether there should be a second referendum. However, some of those didn’t answer the other two questions.

A spokesperson for Stirling and Clackmannanshire Liberal Democrats, who organised the test of opinion, said: “Our Westminster Parliament is a representative democracy in which our Stirling MP is supposed to represent the view of his constituents.

“Stephen Kerrhas previously said that he supports the views of the Brexit fanatics, which will cause a devastating impact to our country’s economy and jobs in Stirling.

“Clearly, people across Stirling reject such views.

“We call upon Mr Kerr to get behind our campaign for a People’s Vote and begin to represent his constituents’ views on Brexit.”

Stephen Kerr MP has signalled his support for the Brexit withdrawal deal, but is looking for key assurances from the Government on the backstop and the union.

The people’s vote campaign has gained momentum in recent months, including a march in London which saw hundreds of thousands backing a second referendum. However, both major parties at Westminster have ruled out such a vote taking place.
