Last chance warning to shop yob

Man must complete work order

- Court reporter

A Cowie yob has been given a chance to complete unpaid work imposed for offences which included kicking and smashing glass door panels at village shops.

Ross Haughton, of Bryden Road, had earlier this year admitted charges of destroying a panel at the Aminas takeaway and another at the Day-Today convenience store, both Main Street, on March 23 this year.

The 28-year-old had further pleaded guilty to a charge of acting in a racially aggravated manner to Imran Nadeem at the Day-Today store by shouting a racially offensive remark at him on the same date.

Haughton had also admitted charges of assaulting two police officers – attempting to headbutt one and kicking another on the body – at Falkirk Police Office on the same date along with a charge of assaulting two other officers in Main Street, Cowie.

His not guilty plea to charges of urinating on the shop floor of the DayToday store – and shouting, swearing and acting aggressively there – were accepted by the Crown.

Haughton had been sentenced on the charges at the end of June and was given a community payback order requiring him to carry out 18 months’ supervision and 200 hours’ unpaid work to be completed within six months.

His brother Stefan Haughton (29), now of Falkirk, had admitted a charge of resisting officers in Main Street, Cowie, on March 23 and was fined £200.

However, when Haughton appeared at Stirling Sheriff Court on Wednesday his agent Frazer McCready told Sheriff William Gilchrist his client “conceded that it’s not been a great start to his community payback order”.

Nevertheless, since he appeared from custody in September 26 this year, and was given a community payback order progress review, there had been “much better focus,” the court was told. Mr McCready suggested fixing a further review in three months time.

Sheriff Gilchrist told Haughton that if he did not complete the unpaid work he would be going to prison.

A progress review was set for February 6.
