Members of Peak in dark

- Chris Marzella

It’s hoped that provisions for users of the swimming pool at the Peak leisure centre will be finalised next week.

The pool at the £27 million sports centre is shut until March following the discovery of a serious defect in its concrete layer.

Now, Peak members will have to wait for arrangements to be made on alternative facilities they can use.

Convener of Stirling Council’s community planning and regeneration committee Chris Kane, said: “Organising alternative swimming provision for PEAK customers is a high priority for Stirling Council and we’re reviewing high school programmes to support Active Stirling’s relocation of services. It is anticipated these arrangements will be confirmed next week.

“This is a frustrating period for all of us and I would like to thank Peak users for their patience as we work with Active Stirling to put these arrangements in place.”

The swimming pool had been due to close for five weeks for what was described as‘essential maintenance’and to upgrade the splash pool facilities. However, a significant defect was unearthed in the concrete layer, forcing the four month long closure.

The 25-metre, six-lane pool, built by Barr Construction, was opened in February 2009.

It remains unclear how much it will cost to fix the faulty swimming pool.

In February 2017, the ice rink at the leisure centre was closed for a fortnight because of a piping problem.

In August 2016 an electrical fault forced The Peak to close for a number of days.

Cracks in a wall of the ice rink at the sports complex were discovered in October 2014.

An investigation was launched after a chemical leak in January 2014.

It was discovered that a small quantity of ammonia had leaked and blown into the swimming pool air vent.
