Title hopes dashed by league leaders

Now thoughts turn to avoiding relegation

Waverley as every point is vital.

“We were under no illusions that the step up to the top tier would be challenging and so it has proved but we have fought every step of the way and we will come back from the break determined to climb the table and win our relegation battle.”

Elsewhere in Division Four the thirds returned to winning ways with a convincing 4-1 defeat of Waverley 3 that will send them on the road to Dunbar knowing a victory could turn the heat up on leaders Watsonians.

Skipper Stewart Penman said: “With our game in hand against Dunbar tomorrow it was all about putting ourselves in the position to cash in on that and we did that convincingly at Waverley.

“We are 16 points adrift of leaders Watsonians with 18 to play for and it’s vital we scrap for every available point to make sure we are as close to them as possible, if not above them going into the break.”

The ladies side finished the first half of their campaign with an emphatic 4-1 victory over ESC 2 that has moved them to within 15 points of leaders Edinburgh University at the break.

Captain Sheena Logan said: “It was vital to win as well as possible and we put on a really solid show the whole way done the order.

“I must make special mention of young Lucy Murchie who took Senga MacFie, the former world top-30 ranked Scotland No 1, to four sets and was very unlucky not to push her to five. Lucy will have learned lots from taking on such a wily operator.

“So we go into the break second and within striking distance of Edinburgh University and with it all to play for after Christmas.”
