County go down in Scottish final

-

The Beast from the East struck, meaning Stirling Albion played seven games in March, another four in April and four successive defeats meant they ended up scraping into the play-offs.

Their successful February, though, saw Player of the Month and Manager of the Month Awards for Peter MacDonald and Dave Mackay respectively while Darren Smith collected the League 2 Player of the Year

Bannockburn reached the semi-final of the Scottish Amateur Cup but came up against a solid Shortlees side who won 1-0 and took the trophy back to Kilmarnock.

Fallin faced St Bernard’s from Edinburgh in the East of Scotland Cup final but were well beaten, losing 4-1.

Stirling County’s final two league games ended in defeat but they made history when a 51-19 BT Cup semi-final over Hawick took them to Murrayfield to meet champions Melrose.

On the day their opponents were too strong, winning 45-12, but the County faithful enjoyed their day in the spotlight.

The club’s U18s won the National Youth League Cup with a 29-5 victory over Ayr and Strathendrick neared West League 2 promotion with seven straight wins.

At the Commonwealth Games on Australia’s Gold Coast a host of medals came the way of local athletes, with swimmer Duncan Scott landing six including one gold - for the most medals won by a Scot at a single Commonwealth Games.

Also landing silverware were swimmer Ross Murdoch (silver), triathlete Marc Austin (bronze), shooter Seonaid McIntosh (two bronze) and swimmer Aimee Willmott (gold for England).

Bowls, golf and cricket all began for the summer and in the Forth and Endrick Football League kicked off.
